Cervical/lumbar decompression.
Most Americans suffer from one kind of back pain or another. That’s why Jules A. Preudhomme, MD, believes in using only proven, evidence-based approaches to treating patients’ pain. Approaches such as cervical or lumbar decompression.
Pressure on the nerve roots can be caused by bone spurs or herniated, bulging discs. This spinal stenosis often causes pain and weakness. The pressure can be relieved by removing any bone spurs or disc bulges. Nerve root decompression relieves pain and other symptoms.
There is soft tissue between the bones of the spine that acts like shock absorbers. Some patients have these discs compressed by injury, distorting their shape and putting pressure on surrounding nerves. Conditions that may cause nerve impingement include spinal stenosis and disc herniation.
Sometimes surgical options for disc decompression are performed to eliminate the pain of pinched nerves. Dr. Preudhomme does not do these procedures but wants you to better understand them. They include:
Vertebral nucleoplasty – This technique does not require an incision. It is used with patients who suffer from nerve root irritation due to small disc bulges or contained ruptures. It is usually an outpatient procedure where local anesthesia and mild sedation are used to reduce discomfort.
Percutaneous discectomy – A minimally invasive method in which decompression is performed through the skin with a needle. Patients who can benefit from percutaneous disc decompression, or “percutaneous discectomy,” are those with pain from a bulging or herniated disc without a rupture in the outer wall of the disc.
A noninvasive alternative to laminectomy (surgical removal of the lamina to open up spinal canals) is spinal (cervical/lumbar) decompression using a special, computerized, traction-type treatment table. The table allows spinal decompression and eliminates the muscle guarding that is typical in some traction machines.
Dr. Preudhomme has had excellent results bringing about cervical/lumbar disc decompression with this system.
Anyone who has back pain or neck pain caused in whole or in part by a damaged disc may be helped by spinal decompression therapy. These conditions include herniated, protruding or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica or pinched nerves (radiculopathy) and facet syndrome.
Dr. Preudhomme has studied pain treatment techniques from around the world. He draws from among the most effective protocols to help his patients. He has successfully treated many pain sufferers with exceptional results.
